On July 22nd, 2015. Microsoft made a blog post addressing a growing trend, “Revenge Porn”.
For those of you who did not know what this is, I will explain. When someone sends you an intimate photo or video of themselves, that is something personal and private. And when this photo is shared without that person’s approval, often done during a break up, it’s then called “Revenge” porn. This is a problem, considering most of this said porn is affecting women, it is causing stress, depression, embarrassment and even suicide. Some occasions are costing these person’s their careers. This is a problem that needs to be stopped, and Microsoft is making the first steps to doing this.
In their blog, they stated the problems of Revenge Porn and what they are going to do to stop it.
Titling the blog, ‘Revenge Porn:’ Putting Victims Back in Control. The blog addresses all the issues they have and the consequences this content causes to the “victim”.
“That’s why Microsoft will remove links to photos and videos from search results in Bing, and remove access to the content itself when shared on OneDrive or Xbox Live, when we are notified by a victim. While people have been able to report to us in the past, we’ve set up a new supporting web page, available today, to make it easy for victims to let us know about these particular photos and videos.”
This is a wonderful idea. Purging a leading search engine from any way to access these photos and videos. Then, providing a website for people to report “infractions” of their personal life, so that Microsoft can target them directly. The blog also contains resources on online safety for your children, teenagers and work.
Good job Microsoft, you moved up some points in my book.
